10 tips to avoid the auto theft

Worst ever experience, your car is stolen! And then you start reading your insurance cover, which you probably have never done before. Further to my previous post regarding the claiming the stolen car insurance, here are few tips to avoid getting burned.

1. Theft protection devices are not enough: Don't think theft protection vehicle is enough to protect the auto theft. Expert experienced thieves can easily unlock your car.

2. Parking: Park your car in an area that is well-lit and near lots of people or in attended lots. People most of the times, park the car in area where no one can see the car they think, but they invite the thieves in a way.

3. Take your keys: Nearly 20% of all vehicles stolen have the keys in their cars. Or don't even keep your extra keys in your car.
Lock the car: Approximately 50% of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked. Lock it even if it's parked at your own parking.

4. You display and you pay: Keep valuables in your car hidden.

5. Use emergency brake: Emergency brake makes your car harder to tow.

6. Mechanical locking device: You can buy this to lock the steering wheel, or an auto theft alarm system will also do.

7. Disconnect either the battery from the distributor cap if you are planning not to use car for few days. Thieves might not be interested in diagnosing why the car does not start.

8. Don't leave car registration and insurance card your car: Your stolen car will be easier to sell for thieves. You can carry alongwith you instead of keeping them in your car.

9. Consider car models while going for new car: Few cars have higher incidences of car thefts.

10. Vehicle Identification number (VIN): Etch VIN on your car doors and major parts. Car becomes easier to trace.

Involved in car accident...you have a car insurance...what do you need to do next!

Yes, the world seems to be revolving around when you get into an accident. Thankfully you are alive!

After my previous blog regarding the types of car insurance policy, you also need to know, how you can proceed in case you meet an accident.

Here are few tips you need to proceed with after meeting this accident when you have insured car.

1. Give your car insurance policy details alongwith your phone no, address to the person who requires it and your accident has caused the injury or damage to him.

2. If possible take a snapshot of the scene with your camera

3. If there is damage or injury, you need to call the police immediately and wait there till the police arrive.

4. You also need to report your insurance company/broker about the incident.

5. If you intend to claim, before the car is repaired, your broker/insurance company needs to examine it first to assess the actual damage.
It may be the case that, you car gets declared a 'total loss' or 'write-off' and your car replacement cost is much lower than the approved claimed value.

6. If you intend to bear the cost the damage of the third party's damage, your insurer should get agreed to pay.

7. By the time, you get the compensation, you might need to pay for other expenses like hiring car to your home, personal injury expenses etc.

That's it!

My next blog follows with the information on how to claim when your car is stolen

Taking motor insurance? Know the policies available first

Car Insurance Policy Types

Before starting to look for the best available car insurance deal, you need to know
which type of car insurance policy will best suit your needs. There are three different types of car insurance.

Third Party Only
It's a very basic type of cover designed for those looking for budget car insurance only.
Before you drive car on a road, you have to have the car insurance. Third party insurance thus meets the law and lets you drive on the road with minimum cost involved.

As the name itself suggests, it covers the insurance cost of the third party met in the accident by you. This is not comprehensive insurance.

Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT)

Third party, fire and theft offers all the protection of third party only.
Another advantage of this type of vehicle, you also get insurance cover in case, car is stolen or is damaged in the fire/theft.

Fully Comprehensive

It gives the advantages of the both the insurance cover mentioned in above two policies.

According to latest news in the BBC website-

"Drivers are being hit with big increases in the cost of car insurance, even if they have never made a claim. According to the Automobile Association, the average comprehensive premium has gone up by more than 20% in the past year."

The necessary steps can be taken to avoid these increasing expenses in car insurance

High deductibles: a common thumb rule. But easiest way to reduce the costs.

Maintain your car: Well maintained car usually removes towing. Keep the spare keys of the car in case it gets stuck up inside.

Switch insurer:
You can check out few alternate insurers. Now a days it’s 100% online. You can just get the quotes online in few seconds only.

Add on the safety devices:
Though safety devices may cost a bit in the beginning., but may reduce the premium costs.

Minimising the number of drivers:
Few insurance policies can be less expensive of husband and wife are driving a car. But Insuring children can be expensive.
